Kitzbühel: the legendary sports town in the Alps

Skiing holidays with charm

Kitzbühel in Tyrol is famous as the legendary sports town in the Alps. Not least due to the Hahnenkamm race, the annual highlight on the World Cup calendar. In the 5th season (as the time during the Hahnenkamm race is also called), people from all over the world, including famous celebrities, flock to Kitzbühel to cheer on the racers competing for medals. The highlight of the spectacle is the downhill on the “Streif”, probably the most difficult downhill run in the world.

The town between the Kitzbüheler Horn and Hahnenkamm also impresses with a fantastic ski area, snow guarantee 200 days a year and a whole variety of sports opportunities. In short: a skiing holiday destination that offers something to suit all tastes.

Excursion tips in winter

The unique location of the Wildpark Aurach with its view of the Kitzbühel Alps is impressive enough on its own. Not to mention its resident animals. Domestic and exotic animals can be admired on the grounds, including deer, lynx, donkeys, lamas, owls, wild ducks and many more. The feeding of wild game in the large feeding area is particularly impressive. One must for children is the petting corner where animals such as sheep, rabbits and goats can be stroked.

You can take a journey back in time on a visit to the fortress in Kufstein. With a varied programme of guided tours, exhibitions and museums, Kufstein Fortress is a popular excursion destination in the Alpine region. Highlights are the largest outdoor organ in the world, the prison tower in the Kaiserturm and the underground rock path.

Anyone wanting to experience a bit of urban flair during their holiday can explore the cities of Innsbruck and Salzburg. Both cities are just about an 80-minute drive by car away from Kitzbühel.

Insider tips for your winter holiday in Kitzbühel

Mountain hut feeling: On the Melkalm in the Hahnenkamm area, you can top up your energy levels with traditional Austrian delicacies before hitting the slopes.

This restaurant is worth a visit: Huberbräu Stüberl right in the heart of Kitzbühel is a friendly, down-to-earth inn with hearty specialities.

One spot in Kitzbühel where you can experience magical moments: the starting point of the famous downhill run, the Streif, is guaranteed to give you goosebumps. The view from the start down the run takes your breath away. And the thought that sporting success stories have begun and records have been broken at this spot, is really thrilling.

Our top insider tip: What’s that lovely saying: The early bird catches the worm. Take the first gondola up the Hahnenkamm early in the morning at 8.30 a.m. Then whizz down the Streif. It’s a real treat to be the first to carve your tracks down freshly prepared slopes. Breakfast tastes twice as good after this experience. By the way: the Streif is only for experienced skiers. The "Familienstreif", where the most difficult passages are bypassed, is more leisurely.
